16-year-old Jim Stark (James Dean) is new in town. His family has already moved several times because there have always been problems with him. He quickly gets into trouble in his new surroundings too, and things come to a head within 24 hours. A knife duel with gang member Buzz Gunderson (Corey Allen) is followed by a fatal car race. Jim’s parents are unsympathetic, as are his only friends Judy (Natalie Wood) and Plato (Sal Mineo). The three find a temporary idyll on an abandoned estate, but the fateful night comes to a tragic end.
James Dean died in an accident on September 30, 1955. His second major film was not released until four weeks later in October and was given additional tragic significance by his early death. Dean’s portrayal of the rebellious teenager Jim Stark became a defining image of misunderstood youth. A cult quickly developed around him and he became a timeless icon of pop culture.
